Chapter 14

Alessia

I glare at Roman and his goons. “Why did you even contact Angel? You knew it was going to bring nothing but trouble. Angel knew it too. She warned you to keep her out of the middle of things between you and the vampires. You broke that trust.”

His face turns red, and it takes a minute for him to respond. “She’s my sister, Alessia. What do you want me to do? Not warn her when I know they’re coming after the vampires, the same ones who are sitting right in the fucking middle of our homeland territory, mind you, with no notice they’re coming or explanation? They just show up. What do you think the elders would have me do to stake our claim? I’ll figure out how to explain it to the bosses upstairs, but I don’t want my sister anywhere near the danger when it comes, understand? From what I hear, Isala is a fucking piece of work. Shrewder than most. I mean, she snowed Descallia for all those years. Gained his trust enough for him to confide all his secrets to her and make her his right hand. She’s coming for Descallia, and she’s bringing her army with him.”

“So you’re not in any way involved with Isala? Or the disappearance of Lucianna? Give me your word and I’ll take it, Roman.”

His eyes narrow. “I don’t like being questioned like this, but for old times’ sake, I’ll tell you again. I had nothing to do with it. Capiche? Angel told me Isala turned on the vampires because Lucianna came back. That’s what I know to be true. The rest of it are rumors on the street. I’m looking into it, and when and if I have something of value for Descallia or Trentino, they’ll be the first to know.” His eyes do that shifting thing to the left, telling me there’s a lot more to that statement than he said.

“What is it that you’re not telling me?”

His eyes narrow, and he smirks. “Never could get much past you.” He leans in closer across the table. “Here’s the thing. I think this has been brewing for a while and that Uncle Nick was involved in more ways than we knew with Lazareth and the witches.” He looks around again. “And Isala.”

My eyes widen and my chest tightens, but his words don’t come as a surprise, even though they probably should. If witches and the Syndicate have been involved from the onset of our recent problems, that would explain so many things that have happened in the past. How they knew the things they knew. How they were always one step ahead of the vampires. Angel was right. She always thought that may be the case, but didn’t dare breathe a word to her brother. But I won’t give away the personal fears she shared with me today. “That would make sense, given all I’ve heard about what’s happened to the vampires in the recent past.”

He leans back into his chair.
